What is ACT

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a scientifically proven therapy that has been shown to be effective for a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, psychosis, and chronic pain. ACT can also improve the general well-being of people, regardless of whether they have mental health problems or not.

ACT works by helping you develop a healthy relationship with your thoughts and feelings. Instead of trying to avoid or change negative thoughts and feelings, you learn to accept them. You also learn to see your negative thoughts as just thoughts, not facts. You identify your values and take focused actions to live a life that is in alignment with these values. Through this approach, you improve your psychological flexibility – your ability to be present, open to what is, and do what is important, regardless of your thoughts and feelings.

ACT is based on 6 pillars, namely:

  • Contact with the present moment
  • Cognitive defusion
  • Acceptance
  • Self-as-context
  • Values
  • Dedicated action

Fighting the inevitable ultimately comes at the cost of a valuable life.
